Control Agents Used By the District
Modern control agents are designed to have maximum effect on mosquitoes with as little impact on the environment or non-target organisms as possible. Many of them contain growth regulators (hormones) that prevent mosquito larvae from becomng adults, or bacteria that exclusively attack mosquito larvae. Others contain mineral oils or large-molecule alcohols that cover the water surface with a thin film that prevents mosquito larvae from getting air. Adult mosquitoes are controlled with pyrethrum or organophosphate based products. The tables below list all products currently used by the district and provide links to product labels and material safety data sheets, which contain detailed information. Labels and MSDSs are in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format.
Methoprene based products
These generally are used to control mosquito larvae. They contain a growth regulator that prevents mosquito larvae from changing into adults.

Bacillus bacteria based products
These are used to control mosquito larvae. They contain either Bacillus thuringiensis (BTI) or Bacillus sphaericus. These bacteria exclusively attack mosquito larvae.

Mineral oil and alcohol based products
Agnique surface film is used to control mosquito larvae in open water. Because the film is so thin, it does not affect other organisms. ULV oil is used to dilute ULV (fogging) chemicals.

Organophosphate and synthetic pyrethrum based products
These are used for the control of adult mosquitoes either from ultra-low-volume (ULV) fogging trucks or hand-held thermal foggers. The district uses Dibrom only at times of mosquito-borne disease threats, and its application generally is conducted from aircraft. Scourge and Permanone employ a synergistic additive called piperonyl butoxide to enhance the products' effectiveness. Permanone 10% EC is sprayed on surfaces to repel and eliminate mosquitoes that attempt to rest on things like exterior building walls and plants.
